The Russian diplomat described US attempts to present itself as a global example of respect for democratic values as “the height of hypocrisy”: according to Zakharova, Washington’s reputation in this area is not only questionable, but has also suffered a collapse absolute.
“The so-called ‘Democracy Summits’ are a clear manifestation of neocolonial practices in American foreign policy. Behind the efforts to organize and convene them is a desire to actualize and legitimize American tools of external control and of interfering in the affairs of sovereign states. To force everyone to look at the world through the lens of a ‘rules-based order’ promoted to serve Washington’s global interests,” Zakharova said.
She also stressed that Russia was disappointed with UN Secretary General António Guterres’ agreement to attend the summit, which Zakharova called an “unworthy performance”. According to her, with this event, Washington is trying to form an ideological platform to confront Russia and China.
