Efforts to reduce the authority of the Chief Justice of Pakistan to put pressure on the judiciary: Imran Khan

Islamabad: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan slammed the government for trying to limit the discretion of the country’s Chief Justice, saying it was aimed at putting pressure on the judiciary. Significantly, after Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial took suo moto cognizance of the February 22 Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial elections, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar on Tuesday presented the “Supreme Court (Works and Procedures) Act-2023”.
“All of us want judicial reforms, but they (parties of the ruling PDM coalition) have only one goal to avoid elections,” the PTI chief said in a televised address on Tuesday. “The gang of criminals is attacking the Supreme Court of Pakistan to reduce its power, this has been strongly opposed by the public and this protest will continue.” Is taking decisions so that pressure can be created on the judiciary. It is noteworthy that the original jurisdiction of the court is the power to take suo motu cognizance under Article 184 of the Constitution of Pakistan.
