Court arrests WSJ reporter Gershkovich

October 3, 2025

The Lefortovsky District Court of Moscow arrested Evan Gershkovich, a journalist with the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), for two months. This was reported to RTVI in the press service of the court.
“A measure of constraint was chosen in the form of detention for a period of 01 month 29 days, i.e. until May 29, 2023”, indicated the press service.
On March 30, Russia’s FSB announced that Gershkovich had been detained in Yekaterinburg. A criminal espionage case has been brought against him. The FSB said that Gershkovich, on instructions from the United States, was collecting information constituting a state secret about one of the enterprises of the Russian military-industrial complex.
The Russian President’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said Gershkovich “was caught in the act”.
The WSJ editorial said it was deeply concerned for Gershkovich’s safety, “categorically denied” the charges against the journalist and demanded his immediate release.
