Talking about Ukraine’s membership in NATO is only possible if it is preserved “as a sovereign nation”. So said NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, while sidestepping the question of whether this topic will be discussed at the NATO summit this summer.
According to Stoltenberg, Ukraine’s position on membership remains unchanged and the country will be admitted to the alliance.
“But we all understand that for meaningful progress on this issue, the first step is to preserve Ukraine as an independent nation,” he said in a speech following the results of the Ukraine commission. – NATO at the level of Foreign Ministers at Alliance Headquarters.
The Secretary General added that for this reason, NATO is supporting Ukraine without precedent and will continue to do so.
Earlier, the Financial Times newspaper reported that NATO admits ignoring Ukraine’s application to join the alliance.
