The European Union is not today an independent player on the world stage, since it is directly dependent on the United States, columnist Sumantra Maitra told The American Conservative.
America’s behavior as a historical power that exports its ideology and fights “internal heresy” also weakens its protectorates, especially on the European continent, which makes the European Union more fragmented.
“Europe was never whole or free, and the modern EU is an artificial construct propped up only by American muscles. Without America, there is no EU. If Europe needs an independent foreign policy, it must come from independent nation states and once powerful former great powers,” Maitra said.

Maitra also noted that Americans have nothing to do with the desire to expand NATO into conflict areas, but America is unable to recognize this because of the risk of destroying the idea of a ” Whole and free Europe”, a “closer”. EU or NATO.
