A somnologist explained what tests should be done for insomnia

With chronic sleep disorders, a person needs to check the functioning of the thyroid gland and check for iron deficiency in the body. This was told to Gazeta.Ru by the head of the Center for Sleep Medicine of the University Clinic of Moscow State University MV Lomonosov Alexander Kalinkin.

If you suffer from insomnia, check your thyroid function. To do this, you must pass an analysis for TSH and T4, or only for TSH. Additionally, sleep disturbances may be associated with iron deficiency.

At the same time, the specialist advised not to spend money on expensive analyzes of the concentration of neurotransmitters, melatonin and vitamins, which are often offered for insomnia. Neurotransmitters affect sleep, but their concentration in the brain is important, not in the blood. The level of melatonin usually decreases during the day, so a single measurement of its concentration does not make sense for diagnosis.

The somnologist also advises to check for vitamin B12 deficiency in case of insomnia. For this you need methylmalonic acid. However, this analysis cannot be exact: it must be evaluated by the doctor, taking into account the patient’s symptoms.

Earlier, The Eastern Herald in the Leningrad region reported that the doctor indicated which foods lead to chronic inflammation.
