April 11, 2023

Residents of Kamchatka continue to be surprised by the scale of the ashfall that covered parts of the region. Last night in Moscow there was an eruption of another volcano – Shiveluch.

The images show that the passengers managed to pass a cloud of volcanic ash moving in the air currents. Eyewitnesses claim they were about two kilometers from the giant cloud and managed to “sneak through”. The impressive images were provided to Zvezda by Yury Demyanchuk, a researcher at the Volcanic Station of the Institute of Volcanology, Far Eastern Federal District, Russian Academy of Sciences.

Earlier, Yuri Demyanchuk showed what the area became after the ash fell. In the village of Klyuchi, it is visible all around, “everything lies, about 5-6 centimeters.”

Another scientist, director of the Kamchatka branch of the Federal Research Center “United Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences”, Danila Chebrov, said that “the volcano has finally started to erupt as it should”. He added that in the summer, volcanologists have already issued warnings about the possibility of an imminent Shiveluch eruption.

Rescuers have already gone to help residents of the ash-covered village in the Ust-Kamchatsky district of Kamchatka. There has not been such a powerful ash fall in this region for 60 years.
