October 3, 2025

The United States Department of Justice has opened a criminal investigation into the fact of leaking classified Pentagon documents with the publication of information constituting a military secret on the Internet. US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced the opening of an investigation into the crime.

“The case has been forwarded to the Department of Justice, which has launched a criminal investigation,” Austin said, as quoted by RIA Novosti.

The Pentagon chief has admitted he is concerned about the spy scandal and since April 6, as soon as the leak of classified documents became known, he has demanded a daily progress report from his subordinates of the incident investigation.

“I am on a daily basis to convene senior ministry officials to discuss how to respond to what happened,” – said Austin.

At the same time, the head of the US Department of Defense declined to provide details of the investigation, citing that it now falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of Justice.

“I cannot speak in more detail while the Department of Justice investigates. But we take it seriously,” Austin said.

Earlier it was reported that the US Department of Justice was investigating the circumstances of the leak of about 100 secret Pentagon documents containing information on military assistance to Ukraine, the deployment of air defense systems to Ukrainian activists and other classified documents. According to former CIA analyst Philip Giraldi, counterintelligence must seek a new Snowden, “seeking to reveal the details of the policy towards Ukraine and Russia”.
