Attorney General Merrick Garland said Monday that the Justice Department intends to appoint a prosecutor and legal adviser to help Ukraine investigate war crimes committed by the Russian military and prosecute suspects.
The prosecutor will work in The Hague at Eurojust, the EU’s agency for cooperation in criminal justice, Garland said after meeting Ukraine’s chief prosecutor Andriy Kostin.
According to Garland, a legal adviser will be sent to the US Embassy in Kiev this summer.
The head of the Justice Department noted that Ukrainian prosecutors are cooperating with his subordinate agency to investigate war crimes under US jurisdiction, such as killing or injuring Americans. Congress recently expanded the department’s powers to prosecute all war criminals found on American soil.
“We’ve made good progress on some of the suspects,” Garland told reporters on Monday, adding that the investigation was “going very well.”
Andriy Kostin told reporters he welcomes Justice Department assistance and said Ukraine was also in talks with U.S. intelligence agencies “about the possibility of sharing intelligence information to investigate and prosecute.” specific war crimes committed by the Russians”.
Last June, Garland appointed attorney Eli Rosenbaum to lead a new war crimes team. The group’s tasks include coordinating and assisting international partners in collecting and analyzing evidence to bring suspected Russian war criminals to justice.
In March 2022, the ministry created the KleptoCapture task force to enforce sanctions and export restrictions against Russian authorities.
