Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

NATO should change its strategy to contain Russia

NATO should change its tactics towards Russia. From the strategy of “punishment or retaliation” previously used by the North Atlantic Alliance, we must move on to “deterrence by obstruction”, writes Bloomberg columnist Andreas Klut.

According to the author, the model that NATO currently uses assumed that Russia would first seize a part of the territory belonging to the alliance. And after that, the United States and the other countries of the bloc, as liberators, will jointly expel the troops from the Russian Federation.

But today’s realities dictate a different strategy. “Deterrence by obstruction” is calculated on the fact that NATO will enter the conflict before Russia occupies its territory.

“Therefore, NATO should announce its intention to monitor any proliferation of nuclear weapons by Russian President Vladimir Putin. If he puts warheads in Belarus, then NATO will place theirs in the Baltics or Poland,” the Bloomberg author wrote.

Earlier, the regional chief indicated that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg’s words about Ukraine’s entry into the alliance could be a test of Russia’s reaction. This opinion is shared by political scientist Yevgeny Mikhailov.
