Nizhny Novgorod SVO participant who lost his leg will return to serve in the Russian guard

October 3, 2025

The State Fund “Defenders of the Fatherland” helped a citizen of Nizhny Novgorod who lost his leg in the NMD to return to service and provide him with a special prosthesis.

Aleksey Afonin, holder of the Order of Courage, took part in a special military operation and lost his leg after being injured. The National Guard, where he served, provided Alexei with a conventional prosthesis, but refused to return to service. Alexei’s wife Anna (pictured next to her husband) has turned to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The answer came from the Defenders of the Fatherland Foundation. Its chairperson, Anna Tsivileva, together with the government of the Nizhny Novgorod region, found an opportunity for Alexei to continue his service in a suitable post. The Foundation will also help with a special running prosthesis so that Alexey can continue to play sports.
