Internet shutdown in Sudan amid clashes

April 24, 2023

According to international internet monitoring service NetBlocks, the internet is almost completely offline in Sudan. Currently, only 2% of the population has access to the Internet. This situation comes in the context of the continuing fighting which began in Sudan on April 15 between the Rapid Reaction Force (RRF) under the command of Mohammed Hamdan Daglo and the regular army.

The two belligerents exchange contradictory statements regarding their military successes and control of installations, which has led to a massive information war in the media and social networks. However, on Friday, the parties announced a temporary three-day truce on the occasion of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr.

The death toll in the clashes continues to rise. According to the Sudanese Minister of Health, the toll has already reached 600 people. According to the World Health Organization, more than 420 people were killed in the fighting between the Sudan Armed Forces and the Rapid Reaction Forces, and more than 3.7 thousand were injured. It is also noted that since the beginning of the clashes, 256 civilians have been killed and 1,454 others injured, according to the Union of Doctors of Sudan.
