The decision, which was passed by New York lawmakers Tuesday night through Wednesday, requires appliances in newly built homes to be electric within three years.

This approach aims to combat by reducing the dependence of New Yorkers on natural gas.

“Changing the way we make and use energy to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels will help ensure a healthier environment for us and our children,” House Democratic Leader Carl Hasty said.

The law requires the adoption of electric heating and cooking methods in new buildings not exceeding seven floors, from 2026.

As for taller buildings, the law stipulates that electrical means must be adopted there, from the year 2029.

The law excludes hospitals and basic infrastructure such as transportation and commercial food establishments.

The law also won’t apply to buildings in areas where the local grid can’t handle the electrical overpressure, and to existing buildings, meaning residents can keep their gas ovens.

According to the US Department of Energy, 52% of households in New York State use natural gas for heating or cooking.

The new resolution was included in a $229 billion budget approved by New York lawmakers.

And the state of Massachusetts, in a law passed last year, allowed ten cities and towns to participate in a pilot program that bans gas stoves and ovens in new buildings, and environmentalists hope to see additional measures. in the state by implementing a law to prevent the use of fossil fuels in new buildings, as happened in New York.
