San Francisco: US Vice President Kamala Harris will meet CEOs of Google, Microsoft and OpenAI (developer of ChatGPT) to discuss how to mitigate the artificial intelligence (AI) potential risks. According to the report, the White House said Harris would stress the need for safeguards to make AI ethical and trustworthy in a candid discussion on Thursday. He will be joined by senior members of the Joe Biden administration, including Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, President Joe Biden’s Chief of Staff Jeff Gentz, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy Aarti Prabhakar.
The meeting is part of a broader effort by the Biden administration to engage with experts about the technology and ensure AI products are safe before they are deployed to the public. The president said last month that AI can be dangerous but it remains to be seen how the technology will affect society. Tech companies have a responsibility, in my view, to make sure their products are safe before they’re released to the public, Joe Biden said at the opening of a meeting of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.
Asked whether AI is dangerous, the President said it remains to be seen but it could be. In an open letter, several tech leaders, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, have called for a pause in the rollout of AI because of the technology’s serious risks to society and humanity.
