The European Union announces stronger anti-corruption rules

May 4, 2023

Brussels – SPA:

The European Commission has announced decisive action to combat corruption in the European Union and worldwide.

The anti-corruption proposals presented by the European High Representative and a number of commissioners during a press conference in Brussels represent an additional step in the fight against corruption at the national and EU levels.

The Commission decided to intensify its actions by building on existing measures, strengthening efforts to integrate corruption prevention into the design of EU policies and programmes, and actively supporting the work of Member States to develop strong anti-corruption policies and legislation. Through its annual report cycle on the rule of law, the Commission also monitors anti-corruption developments at the national level, and identifies challenges and issues related to recommendations submitted to member states.

The range of measures taken includes new and strengthened rules criminalizing corruption offenses and harmonization of sanctions across the EU, as well as a proposal by the High Representative, with the support of the Commission, to create a sanctions regime dedicated to the Common Foreign and Security Policy to target serious acts of corruption around the world.
