Los Angeles: The new Omicron subvariant XBB.1.16 is spreading rapidly in the US. Its share of new cases this week has increased to 12.5 per cent. This has been said in the latest data from the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The subvariant named Arcturus has created a panic among people across the country, a news agency quoted CDC data as saying. It is estimated to account for about 12.5 percent of new COVID-19 cases this week, up from 8.4 percent last week.
Experts warned that the percentage is expected to rise in the coming weeks. XBB.1.16 may possibly become the next most widespread strain of corona virus in the country. The highly infectious Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5 remains the most widespread strain in the US right now, accounting for about 66.9 percent of new COVID-19 cases this week, CDC data show.
