Gynecologist Lela Jokhadze in an interview with Lenta.ru dispelled popular myths about sexually transmitted infections.
According to the expert, in most cases, STIs can only be contracted through sexual contact, but there are still situations when infection occurs in a different way. The fact is that genital herpes, hepatitis B, HIV, and papillomavirus infection are also considered sexually transmitted diseases, so it becomes clear that you can get an STI through contact with blood or from mother to child.
Moreover, according to the doctor, infection can occur in the pool or by contact with the toilet seat and this is not a myth. Jokhadze also said that even with one sex with an infected person, there are high risks of contracting the disease, and even those who used a condom have chances.
In addition, it is far from correct to believe that STIs are found only in drug addicts and prostitutes. The likelihood of such diseases occurs during casual sex and no one is immune from this.
In conclusion, the gynecologist said that far from all cases of gonorrhea in men leads to impotence, contraceptives should be used not only for vaginal, but also for anal and even oral sex. She also added that urination is not a method of preventing STIs.
“You can’t be negligent in this matter, use proven methods of protection: examination of sexual partners and condoms,” Jokhadze said.
It is important to understand that often sexually transmitted diseases are accompanied by unpleasant symptoms. To avoid all this, the specialist advised to be regularly examined by doctors, as well as to be faithful to yourself and your sexual partner.
“In addition, it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle, stop drinking excessive alcohol, so as not to make the body more accessible to viruses and infections,” the gynecologist concluded.
