Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree on the celebration of Europe Day on May 9 in the country.
“To realize the European identity of the Ukrainian people… To establish Europe Day in Ukraine, which is celebrated every year on May 9 with the states of the European Union”, reads the corresponding document published on the website of the leader of Ukraine.
It is noted that the decision was taken, among other things, “in order to strengthen the unity of the peoples of Europe”, as well as to ensure peace, security and stability on the European continent.
From Zelenskyy’s video message posted on his Telegram channel, it follows that on May 9 Ukraine will celebrate Europe Day, and on May 8 it will celebrate the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism during World War II.
The bill on the abolition of three important Soviet holidays – Labor Day, Victory Day and March 8 – was registered by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine earlier this year.
In April, Zelenskyy at the legislative level banned giving names associated with Russia to geographical objects.
