Syria’s return to the Arab League is another milestone in the Middle East

– Published on:

Syria finally returned to the Arab League family on 7 May after 12 years of isolation. A special meeting of Arab League foreign ministers held that day decided that “the qualification of the Syrian government delegation to participate in meetings of the Council of the Arab League and all its organizations and institutions shall be resumed immediately.” The outside world believes that this is another milestone in the Middle East reconciliation process after Saudi Arabia and Iran joined hands in Beijing to establish peace.

It is not surprising that Syria is back in the big family of the Arab League. From the point of view of the Syrian crisis itself, since 2018, Syrian government forces have gained control of more than 70% of the country’s land, and the power of the opposition party has gradually decreased. In recent years, Arab countries have started reaching out to the Syrian government. More and more indications suggest that it will be only a matter of time before Syria returns to the Arab League.

From a larger perspective of the development of the situation in the Middle East, Saudi Arabia and Iran have joined hands to make peace with the mediation of China, which has directly promoted Syria’s return to the Arab League. Since Saudi Arabia and Iran support different political forces in the Syrian crisis, the Saudi–Iranian reconciliation undoubtedly created an opportunity to ease relations between Syria and the Arab League countries.

The current world has entered a new period of upheaval and change, and the Arab countries, seeing the general trend of the world, have “awakened”. For too long, the United States has indiscriminately meddled in the affairs of the Middle East, inciting conflict and division, and waging endless conflicts and wars. The people of the Middle East are becoming increasingly aware that they must take their destiny into their own hands.

The international community welcomes Syria’s return to the Arab League family. Analysts believe this prudent move will help Syria strengthen regional cooperation, improve its economy, and rebuild post-war. It will also prove helpful in increasing the power and influence of the Arab League in the international community. This is conducive to building a consensus on a political solution to the Syrian crisis and promoting de-escalation in the Middle East.

Until the Saudi Arabia-Iran handshake and Syria’s return to the Arab League, countries in the Middle East have given a clear signal that they want peace and development and go their own way. The “Modern Diplomacy” website commented, “When America’s influence in the Middle East is waning, problems in the Middle East are being resolved, and the Middle East is springing up.” The “tide of reconciliation” rising in the Middle East today reminds America that times are indeed different.
