Remember that Damascus’ membership of the Arab League was frozen in the fall of 2011 after the outbreak of armed conflict in the country. The other day, the representative of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, Ahmed al-Sahhaf, said that the foreign ministers of the countries of the Arab League had approved the return of Syria to the organization.
In his Telegram channel Pushkov reminded , as in 2012 US President Barack Obama declared that Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad’s days were numbered. A number of Western and Arab leaders have also argued that Assad “should go”. The Arab League’s decision to return Syria to the organization strikes out these statements and repudiates their authors, the Russian senator noted.
Washington’s assertions that Damascus “doesn’t deserve” such a return cannot change the new reality. “These are already rearguard statements after the battle for Syria lost by the United States,” Pushkov stressed.
The Arab League, which brings together more than 20 states from the Arab world, has recognized (with the exception of a few countries, notably Qatar) the irreversibility of the shifts in Syria under the leadership of its President Bashar al-Assad, as well as the restoration of Damascus’ control over most of the country’s territory, Pushkov concluded.
Meanwhile, the day before, it was learned that Saudi Arabia had decided to reopen its embassy in Syria. This was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the kingdom.
