Washington: US President Joe Biden has extended the national emergency declared for Syria by one more year while maintaining sanctions against the government of President Bashar Assad. The White House gave this information by issuing a press release. “Therefore, pursuant to Section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act, I am continuing for one year the National Emergency I have declared with respect to the Government of Syria,” Biden said in a Monday release. Biden extended the US national emergency on Syria days after it returned to the Arab League.
The foreign ministers of the Arab League countries announced on Sunday that Syria would return to the organization. Syria’s membership was suspended in 2011. It is notable that the 22-nation Arab League suspended Syria’s membership in 2011 after the war broke out in the country. Several member states then recalled their ambassadors from Syria in protest against Assad’s policies and accused his government of cracking down on protesters in the country. Recently, some of those countries have started taking steps to reconnect with Syria and reopen their respective embassies.
