Researchers find muscle-strengthening drugs can cause damage to heart blood vessels

May 13, 2023

Researchers at the University Hospital of Copenhagen have found that anabolic steroids, once ingested, can continue to cause harm years after they stop taking them. The results of the study were presented at the 25th European Congress of Endocrinologists in Istanbul.

The new study looked at 64 healthy Danish men aged 18 to 50 who were involved in strength training. Of these, 28 men were currently using anabolic steroids, 22 were previously but no longer used, and 14 had never taken them.

Using positron emission computed tomography (PET-CT) with the radioactive tracer rubidium-82, scientists found poor blood flow in the heart area in former and current steroid users.

For those who have used steroids in the past, the risk of heart disease is higher than for those who have never used it. Gazeta.ru .

Anabolic steroids are synthetic versions of the natural sex hormone testosterone. They can improve athletic performance, but they can also cause side effects. For men, the effects of anabolic steroids can include breast growth, hair loss, decreased testosterone levels, and erectile dysfunction.
