mortality from COVID-19 has deprived humanity of 336.8 million years of life

May 19, 2023

The WHO said today that the death toll caused by the coronavirus pandemic has resulted in a total loss of more than 336 million life years in 2020-2021, causing progress in health development to stall.

According to experts, 336.8 years of life lost corresponds to an average of 22 years for every excess death.

“COVID-19 has led to staggering losses in life expectancy – globally,” the WHO said.

If from 2000 to 2019 the average life expectancy of a person increased from 67 to 73 years, then during the pandemic, many health-related indicators fell, and the proportion of deaths continues to rise steadily.

If this trend continues, then infectious diseases will account for “about 86% of the 90 million deaths” recorded annually, writes TASS .
