London: The funeral of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II cost the government an estimated £162 million (about US$200 million). The Finance Department has given this information. The Queen was cremated with state honors on September 19 last year, a first in the country since the funeral of former prime minister Winston Churchill in 1965. Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8, 2022.
The Queen’s death was followed by 10 days of national mourning and her funeral was attended by leaders and dignitaries from many countries. This expenditure has been informed in a written statement given in Parliament on Thursday. A senior official of the Finance Department said that the priority of the government was that the last rites should be conducted smoothly with dignity and during this time the safety of the public should also be ensured.
