Republicans ‘reject’ US debt talks

– Published on:

Republicans on US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s team have made a proposal to “reject” negotiations with the Joe Biden administration on the issue of the national debt ceiling. So said White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, reports RIA Novosti.

The Republican proposal “was a big step backward and contained a very biased and unacceptable set of demands,” she said in a statement. No details of this proposal are given.

According to Jean-Pierre, the president has repeatedly put forward various proposals to reduce the budget deficit. However, the parties have not yet been able to reach an agreement.

A White House press secretary accused “the Republican leadership, beholden to its MAGA wing” of pushing the country into bankruptcy with its “radical one-party demands”.

In January, the United States exceeded the legal debt ceiling by $31.4 trillion. The Biden administration may be unable to pay its obligations by June 1, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has warned. Biden has canceled some foreign trips due to the state debt situation.
