Excess cortisol stimulates weight gain

May 26, 2023

Endocrinologist and cardiologist Alexei Zhito talks about the role of cortisol in the formation of the “hormonal belly”, writes NHS .

Cortisol, a hormone produced by the adrenal glands in response to stress, is “the silent enemy,” he called it.

According to the doctor, elevated levels of cortisol are an obstacle in the fight against excess weight. The stress hormone stores fat unevenly – a sure sign that the body has too much cortisol.

In a person who is often stressed, cortisol is released in the body, which leads to the accumulation of fat in the abdomen, while other parts of the body do not gain weight.

Excessive levels of cortisol can harm the body. It reduces muscle mass, causes fat to accumulate in the center and around organs such as the kidneys.

High cortisol levels can cause cravings for fatty foods and alcohol. Too much cortisol in your blood can cause puffiness under your eyes, making it look like you’re always tired or hungover.

If you suddenly gain weight, your doctor will advise you to see an endocrinologist, who can determine the level of cortisol in your body by prescribing a test.
