The tiger shark that killed a Russian in Hurghada will be embalmed for a museum

The tiger shark, in the attack of which 23-year-old Russian Vladimir Popov died in Hurghada, will become an exhibit of the Museum of the Institute of Marine Sciences and Red Sea Reserves, informed Al-Arabiya.

Specialists of the institute have already begun to embalm the carcass of the marine predator, which was dragged ashore and beaten with sticks by local fishermen. The information that it was a female tiger shark has been confirmed. From his stomach, the remains of the deceased were removed – the head, arms and upper torso.

Director of the National Institute of Marine and Fisheries Sciences Hashim Madkur, explain in an interview with Sky News Arabia that the museum also plans to immortalize the memory of Vladimir Popov by placing a marble tablet next to the effigy of his killer, on which will be engraved the story of his death and an obituary .

Embalming dead killer sharks is common practice, Madkour said, and the museum has embalmed tiger sharks on display before. “The fish that attacked the Russian youth reached a length of 3.20 meters, weighed half a ton and lived for about eight years,” said the director of the institute, assuring that all visitors to the museum could watch the killer shark plush without restrictions.

According to Al Arabiya, a fisherman trying to help Popov scared off the predator who, as he claimed, was going to swallow the prey completely, but because of the boat’s approach, she threw her lower body and swam. The fisherman picked up the remains of a young man from the water and chased the shark, managing to catch him. Many eyewitnesses to the death of the swimmer were waiting on the shore, and as soon as the opportunity arose, they began to beat the shark with improvised means.

The Institute of Marine Science and Reserves of the Red Sea explained that it intends, through preparation and various analyzes, to shed light on the reasons why the shark attacked a person in order, if possible, to develop a plan to prevent such incidents. The Egyptian Ministry of the Environment has created a special commission to establish the nature of the changes in the behavior of the predator. In the area where the incident occurred forbidden fish on all vessels, including private vessels serving tourists.

The local governor, Major General Amr Hanafi, has pledged to consider installing protective nets in the sea near some beaches, near hotels and in tourist spots, according to Al Arabiya. With the Association of Tourism Investors, he promotes the idea of requiring hotels that have their own beaches to pay for the installation of networks. In addition, we are talking about the development of standards for such barriers – with a clear indication of the characteristics of the networks, their distance from the coastline, the method of attachment, etc.

Al Arabiya reported that “statistically, sharks rarely attack swimmers near Red Sea beaches”. Nevertheless, in 2022, Austrian and Romanian tourists were victims of such attacks, and in fact in the same place and with only a few days difference.
