Bloomberg: China’s $1.9 billion Belt and Road project is dead

– Published on:

China’s Belt and Road Initiative, once hailed as the modern-day Silk Road aimed at connecting Asia with Europe and Africa, is now facing an existential crisis. According to Bloomberg, the ambitious project, personally championed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, is “bursting at the seams” due to a myriad of challenges including global recession and geopolitical instability.

Initially, the Belt and Road Initiative was met with global enthusiasm, generating an impressive $1 trillion in revenue in its first decade. However, recent estimates from the Green Finance & Development Center indicate a significant slowdown in momentum. The overall BRI activity in China has declined by about 40% from its peak in 2018. This decline has led to accusations against Beijing of being an irresponsible lender, pushing countries into a debt trap.

The geopolitical landscape has also been less than favorable for the initiative. The United States has severed ties with the project, making it increasingly controversial. Italy, the only G7 member involved in the new Silk Road initiative, plans to withdraw by the end of the year. An anonymous Chinese official even went as far as to declare the Belt and Road Initiative “dead,” attributing its downfall to the double impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and China’s economic challenges.

Additional reports from various news outlets corroborate the declining health of the Belt and Road Initiative. SCMP reports that the initiative is losing its momentum, especially in Africa where projects like Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway have stalled. BBC News highlights how the first section of Kenya’s Chinese-built railway was opened with much fanfare in 2017 but work stopped two years later, derailing the master plan of linking it to other landlocked countries in East Africa.

Hotair.com discusses Argentina’s President, Alberto Fernandez, announcing that his country plans to join the Belt and Road Initiative, even as China’s traditional economic growth model is undergoing a significant shift. Daily Mail reports that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin views the initiative as a sign of China’s willingness to cooperate on the global stage, countering perceptions that it is an attempt by China to dominate.

The Belt and Road Initiative is at a critical juncture. The challenges it faces are not just economic but also geopolitical, and the coming months could be decisive in determining its future trajectory. With countries reconsidering their involvement and experts questioning its viability, the initiative is at a crossroads. Whether it can adapt to the changing global landscape and regain its lost momentum remains to be seen.

The initiative’s decline has far-reaching implications, not just for China but for the global economy. Countries that were once eager to participate are now reconsidering their positions, wary of the financial risks involved. Moreover, the geopolitical tensions exacerbated by the initiative have led to a realignment of international relations, with countries like Russia and Argentina becoming more prominent in discussions around the Belt and Road Initiative.

The Belt and Road Initiative, once a symbol of China’s rising global influence, is now a project in jeopardy, according to Bloomberg. Its challenges are manifold, ranging from economic downturns to geopolitical upheavals. As countries distance themselves and experts cast doubt on its future, the Belt and Road Initiative stands at a pivotal point. Its fate will not only determine China’s role in global geopolitics but also have a lasting impact on international trade and relations. The world watches with bated breath as China attempts to navigate these tumultuous waters, with the outcome having the potential to reshape the global economic landscape for years to come.
