Boston’s remarkable season was supposed to be about survival. Instead, Joe Mazzulla turned it into a statement, and now the Boston Celtics coach has the NBA’s highest coaching recognition to prove it.

Joe Mazzulla has officially been named the NBA Coach of the Year for the 2025-26 season after guiding the Celtics through one of the most demanding and unpredictable campaigns of his coaching career. The honor marks another major milestone for a coach who has spent much of his Boston tenure navigating pressure, criticism, and expectations that rarely ease inside one of basketball’s most demanding markets.

The award also serves as validation for a season in which many around the league questioned whether Boston could remain among the league’s elite. Entering the campaign, uncertainty surrounded the roster and the team’s ability to maintain its identity amid injuries and changes. Instead of slipping backward, the Celtics produced one of the league’s strongest regular-season performances.

Mazzulla led Boston to a 56-26 record and secured the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference despite dealing with significant roster challenges throughout the season. The Celtics also maintained elite production on both sides of the floor, finishing near the top of the NBA in offensive efficiency while remaining one of basketball’s most disciplined defensive groups.

What may have impressed voters most was not simply Boston’s win total. It was the context behind those victories.

The Celtics spent stretches of the season without full availability from key contributors, including extended issues involving star players. Teams facing those circumstances often shift into survival mode and lower expectations. Mazzulla instead pushed Boston to sustain its championship expectations and preserve a culture built around consistency.

That approach ultimately separated him from fellow finalists. J.B. Bickerstaff and San Antonio Spurs coach Mitch Johnson both received significant support after impressive seasons, but Mazzulla emerged as the clear favorite in voting. He collected 62 first-place votes and finished comfortably ahead of the rest of the field.

The voting reflected more than wins and losses. Around the league, Mazzulla’s reputation has evolved significantly over the last several years.

When he initially took over the Celtics under difficult circumstances, questions surrounded his readiness. Some wondered whether Boston’s championship expectations had arrived too quickly for a first-time NBA head coach. Even after delivering strong regular-season records, criticism occasionally pointed toward late-game decisions and postseason setbacks.

Those doubts look increasingly distant now.

Mazzulla has quietly built one of the NBA’s strongest coaching resumes in a remarkably short period. Since taking over Boston, he has maintained a winning percentage among the league’s elite and consistently kept the Celtics near the top of the standings. He previously guided the franchise to an championship and now adds Coach of the Year recognition to his growing collection of accomplishments.

The historical significance of the achievement also stands out.

Mazzulla became the first Celtics coach to capture the award since Bill Fitch won it during the 1979-80 season. Considering the history attached to the franchise and the legendary names connected to Boston basketball, ending that drought adds another layer to the accomplishment.

At just 37 years old, Mazzulla also became the youngest NBA Coach of the Year winner since Phil Johnson earned the award in the mid-1970s.

Ironically, one of the season’s more memorable moments involved Mazzulla appearing unimpressed by the possibility of winning the award itself. Earlier in the year, he downplayed the significance of individual coaching recognition and suggested that team accomplishments mattered more than personal honors. That perspective remained consistent after receiving the award.

Instead of focusing on himself, Mazzulla credited the Celtics organization, coaching staff, and players for building the environment that produced success.

That response fits the image Mazzulla has built in Boston. While stars often dominate headlines, his approach has centered on habits, preparation, and collective accountability rather than individual attention.

For Celtics fans, the recognition also carries a broader meaning. Championships often define legacies, but sustaining success in today’s NBA can be equally difficult. Teams constantly deal with roster movement, injuries, and shifting expectations. Boston has managed to stay in contention year after year under Mazzulla’s leadership.

Now the coach once viewed as an uncertain choice has another accomplishment attached to his name.

Joe Mazzulla arrived in Boston with questions surrounding him. He now owns an NBA title, multiple elite seasons, and a Coach of the Year trophy.

The criticism has not disappeared entirely. In Boston, it probably never will.

But the résumé is becoming increasingly difficult to argue against.
