LONDON – Prince William and Princess Kate posted a summer photo carousel to Kensington Palace’s Instagram account on Tuesday, marking what the caption called a “special” stretch of months with images spanning Royal Ascot, the Three Peaks Challenge, a family portrait on the grass with their three children, and a tribute to David Attenborough at his 100th birthday celebration.
The collection is less a seasonal photo release than a deliberate piece of institutional communications. The Wales family has spent the past 18 months rebuilding its public presence around Kate’s recovery from cancer, and the July 28 post functions as a kind of punctuation mark on that process: a family that has weathered something significant making the argument, in photographs rather than press statements, that it has come through.
The most closely examined image in the carousel is one that had already been seen. A photograph of William and Kate lying on the grass with their three children, Prince George, 13, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8, alongside the family’s English cocker spaniels Orla and Otto, was originally released in April to mark the couple’s 15th wedding anniversary. Its reappearance in the summer post carries a specific message: this is what we look like, and we look well.
That context is not incidental. Kate announced in January 2024 that she had been diagnosed with cancer, a disclosure that came after weeks of speculation following abdominal surgery and a photographic withdrawal from public life that the palace struggled to manage. She announced she was in remission later in 2024. Her return to public engagement since then has been measured: a Wimbledon appearance, a limited schedule of royal engagements, and a carefully sequenced return to visibility calibrated over many months.
The Three Peaks Challenge photographs represent the most physically declarative content in the carousel. Kate, alongside a group including William, climbed the highest peaks in England, Scotland, and Wales within 24 hours, ascending Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England, and Snowdon in Wales, to raise money for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, the institution that had treated her. Completing the challenge at all was a statement about her physical recovery. Completing it within 24 hours was a more specific statement than the palace typically makes.
Also in the carousel: Royal Ascot in June, where Kate wore a canary yellow dress with a matching hat and William coordinated with a yellow lapel flower. Wimbledon with George and Charlotte. William in a Formula 1 race car at an unspecified circuit. A meeting with Australian conservationist Robert Irwin, son of the late Steve Irwin. And the Attenborough birthday at the Royal Albert Hall in May, at which William spoke.
“It is a rare privilege,” William said at the event, “to celebrate a century of life. But it is rarer still when that person has transformed the way we see the only home that we have, planet Earth.”
Attenborough, whose connection to the royal family has spanned multiple generations, turned 100 in May 2026. The scale of the public acknowledgment of that milestone reflected a specific kind of affection for a broadcaster whose longevity and output have no obvious parallel in British public life.
Prince George turned 13 on July 22, marked by a Kensington Palace video showing him on a beach with Prince Louis, taken by photographer Matt Porteous, who also shot the anniversary family portrait that reappears in the summer carousel. George is expected to begin boarding at Eton College this September, marking a generational transition that the palace will need to manage with the same care it has given the past 18 months of health communications. Charlotte, 11, and Louis, 8, continue their schooling at the junior level.
The summer photo release is a genre the palace has developed with increasing sophistication. It allows the royal family to communicate domesticity without inviting the press to the domestic. It offers images of normalcy without requiring an explanation of what normal currently means in clinical terms. The absence of medical language in the summer post is as deliberate as its presence in the January 2024 announcement. The photographs do not need to say Kate is well. They show it.
What the photographs cannot say, and do not attempt to say: what the current scan results look like, whether treatment is ongoing, what the long-term prognosis involves. Those remain private, as they have throughout. The palace’s management of Kate’s health has been criticized by some commentators as too guarded and defended by others as a legitimate exercise of a family’s right to medical privacy. The summer post does not adjudicate that argument. It sidesteps it entirely, which may itself be the answer.

The autumn will ask different questions. George’s entry to Eton marks the first chapter of a new era for the Wales children’s public visibility. Charlotte and Louis are increasingly present in their own right. Kate’s return to a full engagement schedule will face renewed scrutiny as the season fills.
