BRIGNOLES, France – George and Amal Clooney evacuated their home in the southern French commune of Brignoles with their 9-year-old twins Wednesday, as wildfires moving through Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur forced the displacement of roughly 3,000 local residents alongside the couple. In a letter to Brignoles Mayor Didier Brémond circulated by French media, the couple placed their community before their property and committed to return.
The fires that prompted their departure are part of a broader European catastrophe. One uncontained wildfire in France’s southwestern Gironde region is burning across an area estimated at roughly four times the size of Paris, the largest active blaze in Europe and among the most destructive France has seen since organized fire records began. Three firefighters have died in Greece while battling simultaneous blazes on the Peloponnese peninsula and the Aegean island of Evia. More than 300,000 people have evacuated across France and Spain combined.
The letter to Brémond stated: “As we evacuate Brignoles we want to emphasise 2 things, first we hope you and the people of our city are safe.” It continued: “We are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we’ll be part of making it whole. We love Brignoles and our friends who live there.” Whether the Clooney property survived the fires moving through the Var department was not confirmed at the time of the letter’s distribution.
In an October 2025 interview, Clooney explained choosing a French farm as a primary residence partly because France’s cultural indifference to celebrity status provided their children a more grounded upbringing than California would. The twins have grown up primarily in Brignoles rather than at Clooney’s Los Angeles property. The evacuation removes them from a home that has been a private residence rather than a production address.
Temperatures reached nearly 104 degrees Fahrenheit in France’s Gironde region Wednesday, with extreme heat, drought, and strong winds producing the conditions that fire authorities have struggled to contain since early July. The French government had deployed more than 18,000 firefighters and emergency personnel across affected regions, with additional resources requested from neighboring European Union member states under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. Spain activated similar reinforcements as blazes near Valencia and Catalonia stretched both countries’ aerial and ground response capabilities simultaneously.
The scale of this summer’s fires has crossed every previous threshold for the Mediterranean basin. European meteorological authorities confirmed that 2026 has produced the most extreme fire weather conditions on record for southern Europe, with a stationary heat dome that has refused to break toward the northern coolness that typically relieves temperatures by late July. Drought conditions dried vegetation to critical thresholds through June. Wind patterns along the Mediterranean coast have pushed fire fronts faster than evacuation orders could precede them in some areas.
Fox News, which first reported the Clooneys’ letter to the Brignoles mayor, noted that approximately 220,000 residents and tourists were displaced at the peak of the largest individual fire. The Var department, where Brignoles is located, sits in the zone of direct fire risk and had been under mandatory evacuation orders since Tuesday evening.
Amal Clooney’s legal practice has focused in recent years on human rights cases across Europe and the Middle East. George Clooney’s production company holds commitments in development at multiple filming locations. Neither camp confirmed their immediate relocation plans during the evacuation period, and the broader film industry’s summer production calendar has been disrupted at other active locations in the Provence region, with two additional shoots reportedly affected by the fires. The Venice Film Festival, scheduled to open August 26 in Italy, has not issued any formal statement about regional air quality or event contingency planning.
For most of the people displaced by the current fires, no letter to a mayor will reach print. The 3,000 people who left Brignoles alongside the Clooneys include shopkeepers, agricultural workers, and summer visitors whose evacuation produces no press cycle. The couple’s willingness to put their names on a community statement that acknowledges uncertainty about their own property is a different kind of contribution than the one their production credits represent. Whether it converts to anything measurable depends on whether there is still something to return to.
