Hannah Horvath and her friends are returning to HBO, but viewers will have to wait to find out when. The network has ordered five new episodes of Girls, reuniting creator and star Lena Dunham with Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells for a limited revival.

Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, ten years after the original series ended. HBO has not announced a premiere date, a distinction that matters as the return generates anticipation: next year is the filming timetable, not a confirmed release window.

The announcement, made October 13, brings back the comedy’s four central women and Elijah for another chapter. Judd Apatow will also return as an executive producer, according to ABC News’s report on HBO’s announcement.

Who is returning for the Girls revival?

Dunham will reprise Hannah, the aspiring writer whose ambitions and mistakes helped drive the original series. Williams returns as Marnie, Kirke as Jessa, Mamet as Shoshanna and Rannells as Elijah. The announced cast reunites the show’s central group without establishing the involvement of every performer who appeared during its original run.

HBO introduced the project through a staged video call rather than a trailer containing scenes from the new episodes. Dunham begins by speaking with Williams before Mamet and Kirke join the conversation. She asks whether they would want to work together again and whether they are available the following summer.

The exchange plays on their familiarity with one another. Kirke makes clear that she does not want a year-long commitment, while Rannells joins from a bathroom and agrees to participate. The format confirms the reunion while leaving the characters’ present-day circumstances out of view.

Why Lena Dunham is revisiting the characters

Dunham framed the return as a story-led decision rather than a standing commitment to revive the series. In a statement shared by HBO and reported by ABC News, she said: “We always said we would only return to GIRLS if there was a specific story we were burning to tell.”

She said she had missed the characters but, for a long time, could not picture them in the present day. The idea became clearer around her 40th birthday, when she said the characters came back to her while she was in the shower.

That explanation points to the central creative challenge of the revival. The original series followed four women in their twenties navigating work, friendship, money and relationships in New York. Returning a decade later means revisiting those characters at a different stage of life, rather than simply extending the same moment indefinitely.

Dunham has not disclosed the specific story that persuaded her to return. Her comments explain why she is revisiting the ensemble, but they do not establish plotlines, relationships or where each character will be living when the new episodes begin.

Five episodes, with filming planned for 2027

The order is for a limited run of five episodes. It should not be read as an announcement of an ongoing series or a commitment to further seasons. The narrower format gives HBO and the returning cast a defined project, while leaving open how the new chapter will be structured.

The New York Times reported that HBO had not specified when the episodes would air or stream. The network’s production timetable places filming in 2027, a decade after the sixth-season finale in April 2017.

There is therefore no confirmed premiere month, release schedule or trailer showing new scenes. The announcement video establishes the cast’s return; it is not footage from a completed production.

A return to the show, not a retelling of its original run

The television series Girls originally ran for six seasons from 2012 to 2017. Its premise centered on young women trying to build independent lives after college, with their friendships often complicated by the same ambitions and insecurities that brought them together.

The confirmed return of Hannah, Marnie, Jessa, Shoshanna and Elijah gives the revival continuity with that ensemble. It does not yet answer how much of the original series’ ending will shape the new episodes, or which supporting characters might appear. Those details have not been established in the announcement reporting.

For now, the distinction between a reunion and a release is the useful one for viewers. HBO has commissioned the episodes, named the returning performers and set a production year. The story itself—and the date audiences can watch it—remain under wraps.
