Europe asks France to declare the Chinese ambassador persona non grata

April 24, 2023

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs is asked to declare the Chinese ambassador persona non grata for his remarks on Crimea.

About 80 European parliamentarians sent a letter to French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna with a call to declare Chinese Ambassador to Paris Liu Shaye persona non grata for his remarks on Crimea and the sovereignty of other countries. This is according to a document published by the newspaper Le Monde.

European parliamentarians say Chaiet’s statements on the lack of a valid status for ex-Soviet republics under international law, saying “there is no international agreement”, go beyond “diplomatic discourse acceptable”.

According to the authors of the appeal, such a statement by the Chinese diplomat should be considered a “threat to the security of European countries”.

Earlier, Chinese Ambassador to France Liu Shaye said Crimea “originally belonged to Russia”, and Nikita Khrushchev handed it over to the Ukrainian SSR.
