The high death toll in the Israeli attack on Gaza

The Israeli military stepped up its attacks on Gaza on Wednesday, as rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip, prompting Israel to sound warning sirens and call on residents near Gaza to stand shelter.

The Israeli army announced that it had targeted around 40 rocket and mortar platforms in areas belonging to the Islamic Jihad movement in the Gaza Strip.

He added: “Planes and helicopters have attacked, over the past few hours, about 40 launchers to launch rockets and mortar shells under the ground belonging to the Islamic Jihad, throughout the Gaza Strip.

Israeli Army Radio said more than 170 rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel on Wednesday.

On Wednesday afternoon, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with heads of local and regional councils in the south, saying Israel was “prepared for the possibility of an expanded campaign and heavy strikes on Gaza.”
