Gaza — Israel’s recent ground invasion of Gaza City marks a brutal escalation in its ongoing campaign of destruction and displacement. Thousands of Palestinians have been forced to flee their homes, carrying only what they can, as Israeli forces intensify their attacks on the densely populated urban center in Gaza.

The relentless bombardment in Gaza has left entire neighborhoods in ruins, with humanitarian aid unable to reach those in dire need. This military aggression has been widely condemned by international observers, with many labeling it as a violation of international law and a deliberate act of ethnic cleansing. Civilians continue to bear the brunt of the violence, with many desperate Palestinians forced to evacuate.

Israel Launches Major Ground Offensive in Gaza City

Israel initiated a significant ground offensive into Gaza City, marking a pivotal escalation in its ongoing military campaign. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz declared, “Gaza is burning,” as Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) initiated a coordinated assault involving multiple divisions advancing into the heart of the city, according to The Times of Israel. The IDF claims to have taken control of approximately 40% of Gaza City, targeting Hamas strongholds with coordinated air and ground assaults.

The operation is framed as a continuation of Operation Gideon’s Chariots, which lasted from May to August 2025. The current offensive aims to confront up to 3,000 Hamas combatants believed to be still in the city. Israeli officials assert that the operation is necessary to dismantle Hamas infrastructure and also Palestinians to secure the release of hostages and the occupation of Palestine. However, the offensive has drawn widespread international condemnation. A United Nations Commission of Inquiry concluded that Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza, a charge Israel vehemently denies.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

The humanitarian consequences have been devastating. The Gaza Health Ministry reports at least 59 deaths and 386 injuries in the past 24 hours, more than 65,000 Palestinian casualties since October 2023. More than 180,000 residents have fled south in the last month, seeking refuge from the escalating violence. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has confirmed a famine in Gaza City, exacerbating the already dire situation.

Residents describe the bombardment as the most intense they have faced in nearly two years of war. Long columns of Palestinians are seen fleeing the city on foot or in vehicles, carrying only what they can, as Israeli forces continue their assault. The destruction of civilian infrastructure, hospitals, and schools has further strained humanitarian efforts.

International Reactions

International reactions have been swift and critical. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the offensive as “morally, politically, and legally intolerable,” calling for an immediate ceasefire. A UN commission has labeled Israel’s actions as genocide in Palestine, a charge Israel vehemently denies. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs dismissed the inquiry’s findings as “fake” and alleged that the report’s authors were “serving as Hamas proxies.”

US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Hamas, stating that any use of hostages as human shields would result in “big trouble.” President Trump reiterated US support for Israel, emphasizing the need to confront Hamas.

Arab nations have condemned the Israeli attacks. Qatar’s leadership expressed outrage over the strike on a Hamas leadership meeting in Doha, which resulted in civilian casualties. The attack on the Qatari capital has further strained relations in the region.

The situation remains dire, with Gaza City enduring relentless bombardment and a growing humanitarian crisis. The international community continues to grapple with how to respond to the escalating conflict and its profound human toll. Diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire have so far been unsuccessful, and the prospect of a peaceful resolution remains uncertain.
