President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan will receive the coronavirus vaccine today, according to his Justice and Development Party spokesman, Omar Celik.

Turkey has started immunizing health workers with a vaccine produced by the Chinese company “Sinovak”. Turkish authorities say more than 200,000 health workers have been vaccinated so far.

Celik told a news conference in Ankara that Erdogan decided to get vaccinated in order to remove any public doubts about the effectiveness of the vaccine. The spokesman added that Erdogan would receive the vaccine live on television after a meeting of AKP officials.

The number of Covid-19-related deaths in Turkey has exceeded 23,000.
