The mysterious “Wow Signal” from space turned out to be the trace of two comets

February 13, 2023

Astrophysicists sometimes receive mysterious signals from space that they confuse with messages from extraterrestrial life forms.

The first time scientists received “alien messages” was in 1977. Astronomer Jerry Eyman noticed a strong radio signal in the night sky. This 72-second explosion over Ohio did not match any known celestial bodies.

The impressed researcher wrote the word “Wow!”, and it was under this name that the signal entered the history of space observations. Its source was speculated to be an alien radio beacon.

As scientists discovered nearly 40 years later, two comets discovered in 2006 were the source of the signal. The theory was confirmed in 2017: Passing through Earth, they emitted the exact same signal that Eiman noticed, writes planet today .
