On Monday, February 20, Joseph Biden arrived on an unannounced visit to Kiev. Early in the morning, the plane with the president took off from the American military base in Maryland and headed for Poland. Upon arriving in that country, Biden boarded a train and departed for Ukraine.
It is reported that the visit of the owner of the White House to the Ukrainian capital was prepared under the observance of “the strictest secrecy”. However, according to the Associated Press, Washington, shortly before the trip of the head of the United States, would have contacted Moscow “to avoid conflicting situations”.
Moreover, according to Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, before his visit to Kiev, Biden received “security guarantees” from the Russian Federation.
According to sources, the President of the United States will announce a new aid program for Ukraine, which will amount to approximately 500 million dollars. It is expected to include HIMARS systems, radars, anti-tank systems and various types of munitions. The delivery of long-range missile weapons to Kiev is also on the agenda.
Meanwhile, it’s not yet clear how Biden’s trip to Kiev will affect the US leader’s previously announced visits. Thus, on February 21, Joseph Biden plans to meet President Andrzej Duda in Poland and deliver a speech to the leaders of the states on the eastern flank of the North Atlantic Alliance.
