Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Controversial Kvíslarskóli teacher back to work after furlough

On Thursday last week, parents of seventh-grade children in Kvíslarskóli were told that the school teacher, Sævaldur Bjarnason, would return to work the following day, Friday February 15, after being on paid leave for three weeks.
An announcement about it on mentor.is says:
“We would like to inform you that Sævaldur Bjarnason, who has been on paid leave for three weeks, will resume teaching in the morning. If you as a parent or student wish to discuss this issue, you can contact Bjarkar Einisdóttir, the deputy director.”
According to DV’s sources, Sævaldur was not put on leave because of his conduct in his work at school, but following the media coverage of his behavior as a basketball coach.
Sævaldur is an experienced basketball coach and has, among other things, coached the U-18 women’s team. However, he did not manage the EC team in Greece in the summer of 2022, but KKÍ decided that he would not manage the team due to complaints received by ÍSÍ’s communication advisor regarding his behavior .
This was discussed among others Visir.is on December 17, 2022. ÍSÍ’s communications consultant submitted an opinion to KKÍ (Icelandic Basketball Association) that Sævaldur had not done anything illegal and therefore could continue to work as a coach.
Sævaldur then posted a message on Facebook where he gave his side of the story, but this message provoked a strong reaction from basketball player Sára Líf Boama, who replied to the message and accused Sævalder of inappropriate behavior. Sarah wrote:
“Due to a recent post made by said coach, I would like to relieve myself. I find it lost first of all that you deny what you have done and then act as if you are the victim of the situation. You have caused almost everyone discomfort and anxiety all summer. It’s definitely lost that you can still play for Iceland. You touched us inappropriately and were generally very uncomfortable I will never forget how you made me feel.
How you spanked me with your flat palm and the coach’s card, but most of all I’ll never forget when you came behind me on the big pitch in Finland, spanked me twice, then smiled and laughed saying “no, I didn’t mean to spank you.”
You didn’t deserve to get off so easily. Your position in society is the same as before. You deserved to suffer much longer like all of us.
After this post, you posted on FB knowing what you did! Are you kidding me? Haven’t you thought about sending an apology letter or something or just being human and seeing that you’ve caused us a lot of pain.
It’s not without reason that when we reported that people immediately took to the issues. It hurts… Once again the aggressor gets away with it!!!
In the end, I would like to say how disappointed I am, how disappointed I am with some people who reacted to this post in question, because I thought that they were better informed and had the best interests of children at heart. and young women.”

The discussion in a group of residents led to the authorization

Some time later, a discussion on the issue broke out in the Mosfelling residents’ group on Facebook, and it was criticized that Sævaldur was still working in Kvíslarskóli. This debate no longer seems accessible, but led to the placement of the teacher on three-week paid leave, as mentioned above. He has now returned to work, and this return has displeased some parents.
