US imposes new sanctions on North Korea

The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on individuals and companies it has accused of illegally generating revenue for the North Korean government.
The Office of the Department of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has imposed sanctions on the Chilsong Trading Corporation, which is allegedly used by Pyongyang to obtain foreign currency and gather information.
The sanctions also hit the Korea Paektu Trading Corporation, which the agency accuses of generating funds for the North Korean government since the 1980s through construction and art projects in the Middle East and Africa.
OFAC also sanctioned two people – Hwang Kil Soo and Park Hwa Son – for helping the North Korean government generate revenue, the Treasury Department said in a statement.
The ministry said the individuals set up Congo Aconde SARL to generate revenue from construction and monument projects with local governments.
