Germany: medical trainees work for free for the chancellor’s brother

March 6, 2023

Medical students working at Kiel University Hospital, run by Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s brother, receive no remuneration for their work.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s brother would take full advantage of the law to pay medical students, quite the contrary. Jens Scholz is chairman of the board of directors of the University Hospital of Schleswig-Holstein. According to the Bild newspaper, students who do internships there (PJ) do not receive any remuneration. Relevant information was confirmed, in particular, both by the students themselves and by the newspaper Kieler Nachrichten.

Zero tariff is possible within the framework of legal obligations. In the case of an internship, the remuneration is at the discretion of the institution. However, many clinics are guided by Bafög tariffs. For example, in the ranking of the Praktisch Arzt medical labor exchange, the Rhein-Mosel-Fachklinik Andernach clinic takes first place – with 934 euros. Even at the bottom of the table, the St. Elisabethen clinic in Ravensburg pays its trainees 649 euros per month.

“According to the training regulations, you have to do an internship at the CHU. In addition to that, I had to work two extra days a week, mainly at night. At some point, I had to give up this job, because I couldn’t anymore,” the doctor wrote on Twitter.

No more than 600 g of lettuce

According to Bild, the reason given by the clinic is that there is no legal obligation. According to the Kieler Nachrichten newspaper, it is the only institution that allows “free student slavery”. And one more nuance, also related to economic policy. According to a report by Kieler Nachrichten, until now future doctors could eat for free in the salad bar located at the clinic. It’s probably over: an upper portion limit of 600 grams has been introduced. The hospital speaks of a “balanced and egalitarian approach”. A spokesperson told the Bild newspaper of complaints in response to individual trainees placing “kilograms” of salad and ingredients on their plates.

Hartmannbund describes the situation as follows: “Practice students (PJs) usually work in hospitals as full-time employees and regularly carry out assignments to keep the clinic running.” “However, these trainees should not be considered as free or cheap labour, they are entitled to good training and adequate reimbursement of costs,” asks the association of doctors.

On October 1, 2022, the main promise of the Social Democrats came into force: the minimum wage increased to 12 euros per hour. “The result is that millions of workers who perform complex tasks every day have a lot more money in their pockets,” the Chancellor’s party writes on its website. “Germany needs a respectful society,” says the SPD’s election program for wages and protection against discrimination. But the SPD Chancellor’s brother doesn’t seem to feel compelled to follow these rules – at least not with regard to his trainees (PJler).
