It seems that the right of asylum has lost its support in Germany. According to a representative survey conducted by the Allensbach Institute for Public Opinion Research for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper, only 39% of the population still consider the right to asylum in its current form to be relevant to the realities of Today. In 2017, this figure was 52%. 49% are convinced that this right should be limited; in 2017, this figure was 39%.
Currently, only a fifth of all citizens surveyed believe that Germany is able to accommodate even more refugees. 59% of the population does not consider it possible. In the eastern part of Germany, this figure is even higher – 69%. According to the survey, 39% of respondents are concerned about the situation of refugees in Germany, more than last year (30%).
Recently, the number of people seeking protection in Germany has increased. The number of initial requests almost doubled compared to the previous year. In February 2023, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) received 26,149 asylum applications. About 24,000 of them are people who have applied for asylum in Germany for the first time. For comparison: in February 2022, there were 13,915. For several months, a dispute has been brewing between the federal government, state governments and local authorities over the funding of refugee accommodation.
