Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

Containers with Indian cargoes for Russia remain in the port of Antwerp for a year

Five containers from the Indian company Jindal Stainless sent to Russia have been held up in the port of Antwerp for a year for no apparent reason. This is stated in a company statement.

Its representative specifies that a hundred metric tons of stainless steel are transported in containers. The shipment was sent in February 2022, but was delayed due to anti-Russian sanctions. The company pointed out that the stainless steel was not on the sanctions list and had to be cleared for shipment further down the road.

Reuters drew attention to the strange situation. The corresponding request from the agency at the port of Antwerp has been forwarded to the Belgian Federal Customs Service.

A year ago, the Belgian customs and excise service reported the blockage of more than 1,500 containers with freight for Russia in the ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge. Department head Christian Vandervaeren clarified that the containers can be sent to the consignee after interested parties provide documents confirming that the cargo does not fall under EU sanctions.
