Switzerland can participate in NATO military exercises, which take place on the basis of Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, which implies the principle of collective defence. This statement was made by the commander of the country’s armed forces, Thomas Syussli.
“It doesn’t matter to us whether it’s an Article 5 exercise or a general exercise. It is important for us to understand the deployment procedures, the structures, the processes,” he said in an interview with local broadcaster SRF.
According to him, in addition to the air force and the special forces of the Central European state, ground units of the Swiss troops could also take part in joint training with the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance.
Earlier it became known that Germany wants to buy Leopard 2 tanks from Switzerland, as specified, for its own benefit, and not for deliveries to Ukraine. Bern sees no military reason to refuse to decommission tanks, but the authorities must decide whether such a decision is worth making or not.
