Ukraine struggles to recruit fighters for Ukrainian Armed Forces – WSJ

Ukraine has had problems recruiting new fighters for the army, according to the Wall Street Journal.

According to him, the Ukrainian authorities are struggling to recruit replacements, often recruiting those who have neither the desire nor the training for the service. As a result, an increasing number of men of military age are trying to escape service.

The WSJ writes that one Ukrainian man paid nearly $10,000 to avoid drafting, a second ignored five military subpoenas, and a third avoided public places to avoid receiving a subpoena.

The publication gives examples of those trying to leave Ukraine in various ways or hiding from the mobilization inside the country. Examples are also given when men clearly unfit for service are called up. The material tells the story of a disabled man who was declared fit for service, despite having no hands. Relatives say another died on the front line less than a month after being called up after 10 days of training.
