Japan will continue to participate in energy projects on Sakhalin because of their importance to the country in terms of energy security. This was announced by Prime Minister Fumio Kishida during a meeting of the upper house of the Japanese Parliament.
“In the future, according to forecasts, the demand for LNG will increase, so projects on Sakhalin are important for ensuring the energy security of our country, so we will keep a share of it. On energy supply issues, we are in close cooperation with the G7 countries and the global community,” RIA Novosti quotes.
At the same time, Kishida pointed out that by the end of the second half of 2022, Tokyo managed to reduce Russian oil imports by 90% and coal imports by 60%.
In addition, the Japanese Prime Minister recalled that the sanctions pressure mechanism, which was approved jointly with the leaders of the G7 countries in February, aims to regulate and strengthen the restrictions already adopted. For the moment, according to him, the process of coordination with other countries is underway.
Last week, Kishida paid a visit to Kiev, where he announced Japan’s support for Ukraine. However, the head of government’s compatriots were disappointed with his trip, which many saw as an attempt to boost their own political ratings.
