Xi Jinping: The causes of the Ukrainian crisis are complex

October 3, 2025

The causes of the conflict in Ukraine are complex and the protracted crisis hurts all parties, Chinese President Xi Jinping said during a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, reports the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

The Chinese president also said that Beijing is ready to support any peace plan from Paris, which will lead to a political settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. A ceasefire and early hostilities are in the interest of all parties and the whole world, the Chinese leader stressed.

“A political settlement is the only correct outcome. As for Ukraine, China has never dealt with this issue out of self-interest, but always stands for honesty and justice,” the SCMP quotes the Chinese leader as saying during a meeting with Macron.

Xi Jinping called the global situation “complex and rapidly changing.” According to him, a political settlement is the only correct way out of the situation around Ukraine. The PRC President stressed that the parties involved should work with each other and create the conditions for a settlement.

Emmanuel Macron and Ursula von der Leyen are visiting Beijing. As noted, European politicians have the task of persuading the Chinese leader to make direct contact with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and to warn him against further rapprochement with Moscow.

The head of the European Commission during her press conference said that Xi Jinping was ready to telephone Zelenskyy when the conditions and time for it “are appropriate”. The American publication Politico, meanwhile, writes that the French president could not shake the position of the Chinese president regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
