House Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Sunday that Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas should be removed and his advisers should be investigated.
The announcement comes after media coverage of expensive trips Thomas is said to have made for decades, funded by GOP donor real estate magnate Harlan Crow.
“The House of Representatives has an obligation to conduct an impeachment inquiry,” Ocasio-Cortez said in an interview with CNN .
Ocasio-Cortez believes there is a conflict of interest in the timeline of Thomas’ relationship with Crowe, since their interaction began after Thomas became a member of the Supreme Court.
ProPublica reported Thursday that Thomas has been taking expensive trips with Crowe’s money for decades, despite a federal law requiring the disclosure of most gifts.
Thomas justified the trips, saying on Friday he had been instructed that he was not required to report this kind of “personal hospitality” and that he always tried to follow disclosure rules.
Thomas said he would now follow new rules introduced by the Judicial Conference (created by Congress in 1922 with the primary purpose of providing guidelines for the administration of courts – editor’s note), which is responsible for financial disclosure requirements for the entire federal justice system. .
Crowe told ProPublica that he “never tried to influence Judge Thomas on any legal or political issue.”
Harlan Crow, 74, is the chairman and former CEO of Crow Holdings, a Texas real estate company created to manage the family’s wealth by his father, Trammell Crow.
Although the value of Crow’s assets is unknown, Crow Holdings’ assets under management were $19.6 billion in 2020.
