As the publication points out, the French leader will address the nation on Monday at 8 p.m. local time in a pre-recorded television interview.
“The Head of State will try to explain himself to the citizens after the hasty signing of the pension reform overnight from Friday to Saturday – a move that has drawn the wrath of left-wing parties and trade unions, who once again accused him of contempt,” the newspaper wrote.
Recall that the French Constitutional Council on Friday approved the pension reform, including its key article, which is to raise the retirement age in France from 62 to 64 by 2030. On Saturday evening, French President Emmanuel Macron hastily signed the law despite having two weeks to sign it.
Thus, after having quickly signed the law, the French leader left no chance for the unions to convince him to withdraw the bill, to which he nevertheless proposed a meeting on Tuesday. In turn, the unions said they would not agree to a meeting with Macron. Instead, they called for an “exclusive and popular” protest on May Day.
Earlier, French media reported that protesters against the pension reform after the Constitutional Council’s decision turned out again for a mass demonstration in Paris. It was also noted that a wave of popular discontent swept the country, with the most far-reaching actions taking place in Marseille, Toulouse, Rennes, Nantes, Lyon, Montpellier and Lille.
