Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev demanded that Karabakh Armenians take Azerbaijani citizenship or leave, reports Vedomosti with reference to the Demokrat portal.
“Here, freedom is total, all the democratic foundations are offered. This issue must be resolved on the basis of human rights,” Aliev’s words are quoted in the document.
He also repeated Baku’s position that Karabakh is an internal affair of Azerbaijan and the country does not intend to discuss this issue with anyone.
The situation in Nagorno-Karabakh escalated in September 2020, when clashes erupted again between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The result was a joint statement signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Fighting in the area was stopped and Russian peacekeepers were placed on the line of contact.
In December last year, Yerevan announced the blockade of the Lachin corridor in Karabakh by Azerbaijani militants, which prevents the supply of essential goods to the Armenian population. Baku also said the corridor is used for arms supply.
